Question 244

Dr. Julian is a health psychologist specializing in youth substance misuse. He is currently investigating the behavioral causes of nicotine addiction using case histories of clients he treats at an outpatient dependency clinic.

In one case, Julian noted that a client, Marcus, experienced strong cravings and high tolerance when vaping in his designated office smoking area, but suffered sudden lightheadedness, intense nausea, and an unexpectedly powerful nicotine rush when consuming the exact same concentration of nicotine in a quiet botanical greenhouse during a weekend trip.

Julian asked another client, Sasha, about her motivations for vaping. Sasha explained that sometimes she vaped to experience a pleasant sensory "throat-hit" and enhanced alertness during late-night study sessions, while at other times she vaped to suppress severe irritability, physical restlessness, and a persistent tension headache.

He also observed that many clients grew up in households where older siblings vaped openly to cope with stressful school days, or belonged to college peer groups where owning high-end vaporizers was praised and treated as a key social status symbol.

Evaluate one learning explanation for nicotine addiction in relation to Julian's case studies.

You must make reference to the context in your answer.
