Question 198

Dr Aris is conducting an observational study in a local community center's drop-in crèche. She observes infants aged 12 to 18 months in a playroom filled with age-appropriate toys.

She notes the following behaviors:

  • Some infants, such as Elena, are happy to play with blocks as long as their mother is nearby, look worried when she leaves, but are quickly calmed down and resume playing when she returns.
  • Other infants, such as Toby, do not seem concerned when their father leaves the room, and when he returns, Toby actively looks away and continues playing with a toy train, ignoring his father's attempts to make eye contact.
  • A third group, including Maya, cry intensely and are highly distressed when their parent leaves. Upon the parent's return, Maya clings tightly but also angrily kicks away a plush toy her mother offers.

Evaluate Ainsworth's classifications of attachment. Refer to the observations made by Dr Aris in your answer.
