Aanya and George conducted a study into obedience in a university campus environment. They investigated whether undergraduate students are more obedient to a security guard wearing a high-visibility jacket than a security guard in plain clothes. They approached the first 40 students walking past the main library on a Monday morning and asked them to complete a hypothetical scenario questionnaire. The scenario asked whether they would comply with an instruction from the security guard to immediately take a different, longer route to their lecture due to 'routine maintenance'.
Table 1 shows the number of students who reported they would or would not follow the instruction.
| Security guard in high-visibility jacket | Security guard in plain clothes | |
|---|---|---|
| Number of students who would follow the instruction | 31 | 17 |
| Number of students who would not follow the instruction | 9 | 23 |
