A cognitive psychologist investigated the duration of short-term memory using a Peterson and Peterson distractor task. Participants were presented with a consonant trigram and asked to recall it after a retention interval. The duration of successful recall (in seconds) before forgetting occurred was recorded for a sample of 80 participants. The results are shown in Table 1 below.
