Many people are terrified of being bitten by Komodo dragons. However, these giant lizards may possess life-saving secrets. Scientists have identified cationic antimicrobial peptides (CAMPs) in Komodo dragon blood, which they have named 'DRGN-1'. They hope these peptides can be used to develop new treatments for multi-drug resistant bacterial infections, particularly those found in infected topical wounds and diabetic sores.
The researchers collected blood plasma samples from Komodo dragons. They isolated the active peptides, which target biofilm-forming pathogens. In laboratory investigations, synthetic DRGN-1 successfully killed several bacterial species, including MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These 'superbugs' are highly resistant to standard clinical therapies and cause serious, life-threatening infections.
Further studies on DRGN-1 revealed other benefits. It exhibits wound-healing properties by promoting skin cell migration to close wounds. In addition, the peptide destroyed nine out of twelve strains of the pathogenic fungus Cryptococcus neoformans in sample cultures.
Komodo dragons possess a robust immune system that functions differently from that of humans. While humans often rely on vaccination to trigger an adaptive response and establish long-term protection, Komodo dragons have a highly effective innate immune system that rapidly neutralizes pathogens upon first exposure. This helps them survive frequent, dirty bites from rivals when defending their territories from other dragons during the breeding season.
