Dengue Fever Outbreaks
Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes. In 2022, a major survey linked climate change to an increase in outbreaks across several tropical provinces. Higher regional temperatures accelerate the reproduction rate of the virus inside the mosquito vector and shorten its feeding cycle.
In one heavily affected province, monitoring records showed that there were 1,625 documented cases of Dengue fever showing severe symptoms. Among these documented cases, there were 39 deaths.
Furthermore, altered rainfall patterns have led to both prolonged droughts and sudden, intense downpours. During the dry season, residents frequently store water in open artificial containers, which inadvertently provides perfect breeding sites of standing water for the mosquitoes. In the wet season, heavy rainstorms of more than 6 cm create temporary outdoor pools where mosquito larvae can hatch and thrive.
