Scientists have identified novel antimicrobial proteins in platypus milk, which they have named 'Monotreme Lactation Protein' (MLP). The researchers collected milk samples from lactating platypuses. They isolated the active proteins, which target biofilm-forming pathogens. In laboratory investigations, synthetic MLP successfully killed several bacterial species, including MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and Klebsiella pneumoniae. These 'superbugs' are highly resistant to standard clinical therapies and cause serious, life-threatening infections.
Further studies on MLP revealed other benefits. It exhibits anti-inflammatory properties by modulating immune cell signaling to reduce swelling. In addition, the protein destroyed eight out of eleven strains of the pathogenic fungus Candida auris in sample cultures.
Platypuses possess a robust defense system that functions differently from that of humans. While humans often rely on vaccination to trigger an adaptive response and establish long-term protection, platypuses rely heavily on passive transfer of immunity via these specialized milk proteins to protect their highly vulnerable, immune-undeveloped offspring (puggles) upon hatching. This helps the young survive in damp, microbe-rich nesting burrows where they are constantly exposed to soil pathogens.
Male platypuses also possess venomous spurs on their hind legs, which they use to defend their aquatic territories from other males during the breeding season. This defense ensures access to vital resources.
