Question 13

The passage describes the structure and nutrition of fungi.

Complete the passage by writing a suitable word or words in each of the spaces.

Fungi are eukaryotic organisms that can be multicellular, such as mushrooms, or unicellular, such as \text{\_______________}. Unlike plants, their cell walls are made of \text{\_______________} rather than cellulose, and they do not contain chloroplasts, meaning they cannot perform photosynthesis. Instead, they obtain nutrients through a process called \text{\_______________} nutrition.

In multicellular fungi, the body is usually organised into a network of thread-like structures called \text{\_______________}, which together form a mass known as a \text{\_______________}. These organisms feed by secreting extracellular \text{\_______________} onto food material outside their body and then absorbing the soluble products. Fungi store carbohydrates as \text{\_______________}, which is the same storage molecule used by animals.
