The desk between the repairs
Text: an original contemporary feature-style practice extract.
At ten o’clock, every bench in the repair workshop was occupied. Lamps, clocks, bags and small pieces of furniture waited beside handwritten forms. Mina sat at the intake desk nearest the door, labelling each object, placing loose parts in clear bags and noting when its owner would return. From her chair, she could see all six benches, though she belonged to none of them.
The system was not essential to every success. One repairer reached across the desk for a clock before Mina had finished its form, secured the loose hand and returned it within minutes. Mina laughed, crossed out the unfinished entry and let the owner leave. Later, however, a volunteer asked for the two screws that had arrived with a radio. Mina found them in the bag attached to its label. She also redirected three waiting objects when the woodworker left early. One label proved wrong: she had sent a clock with a split wooden case to the electrical bench. When the mistake was pointed out, she changed the form without defending it.
Shortly before noon, Mina declined a coat with a torn pocket because the only sewing volunteer was due to leave and still had two bags waiting. The owner called the damage “a five-minute job” and went away dissatisfied. Forty minutes later, the volunteer was still working on the first bag. That did not prove the coat could not have been fitted in, but it made Mina’s decision look less officious than it had sounded.
By closing time, some objects had been repaired, some had been judged beyond the workshop’s equipment and others were booked to return. Mina had mended none of them. She had kept their parts together, recorded what had already been attempted and altered the order of work whenever a bench became free. The repairs belonged to the hands at the benches; yet the day had worked as one room because Mina had spent it seeing the whole.
