The first bell-ringing practice
Text: an original contemporary personal account-style practice extract.
At my first bell-ringing practice, the tower captain offered beginners two ways to start. We could learn handbell patterns in the meeting room or watch the ropes from the doorway upstairs. I chose the handbells because the pattern cards allowed me to concentrate on one change at a time. An experienced member joined our table to revise a sequence she had forgotten. By the end, I was listening for my place instead of trying to copy everyone else.
