The packet opened twice
Text: an original contemporary reportage-style practice extract.
Inside the seed bank's cold room, summer had been reduced to rows of grey drawers. Each packet carried a place, a year and a number. Together, the labels made weather, soil and distance look sortable. The technician ran one finger along the packets before removing the smallest. Nothing about it suggested a field.
At a workbench, she opened the packet and tipped its contents onto a black tray. The seeds fell in a brief, dry shower, then lay apart like commas from an alphabet no one had finished reading. She counted them twice. Some went back into storage; others were placed in a separate envelope to be grown. Opening the packet seemed to oppose the purpose of keeping it, but leaving every seed untouched would not keep the collection unchanged forever.
Four months later, the envelope's number appeared on a label at the end of an outdoor plot. The plants did not rise in the seed bank's neat rows of drawers. Some leaned across their neighbours; one gap remained bare. Wind worried the labels, and rain had softened their ink. Yet the repeated number connected this uneven patch to the ordered room where the packet had waited.
After the plants produced new seeds, the technician returned with another envelope. Back in the cold room, the drawer closed on a packet carrying the old number and a new date. The collection had not been preserved by remaining still. It had survived by being made briefly vulnerable.
