Question 1

The model boat regatta

Text: an original contemporary event-feature-style practice extract.

The loudest boat at the regatta was smaller than my shoe. Its owner knelt on the grass, working the controls while a thin wake stitched the pond into temporary sections. Beside him, a child held a boat twice its size. Neither vessel seemed aware of the seriousness gathering around it.

The race began with three boats pointing in roughly the correct direction. One turned too early; another drifted towards a duck that refused to become part of the course. Spectators called advice from the bank. The child said nothing, watching the largest boat make its slow turn around the buoy. For several seconds, careful movement looked like losing. Then the smaller craft overshot the next marker and had to return.

At the finish, nobody agreed immediately about which bow had crossed first. The organiser asked the competitors to wait while she checked the video. The pond settled into one smooth surface again. The child put down the controls and looked at the adults discussing the result. An afternoon played at a small scale had discovered a surprisingly large capacity for argument.
