Question 2

The glasshouse

The glasshouse stood at the edge of the winter gardens, glowing through the sleet. Inside, heat gathered around Arun’s face like a damp scarf. Broad leaves crowded the path; drops slid from their tips and struck the tiles with patient little ticks. He had come to sketch the plants for homework, but his pencil remained above the page. Outside, people hurried past with their shoulders raised. Here a tendril had taken an entire week to reach the next wire. Arun lowered himself onto the bench and watched a bead of water swell beneath a leaf. For once, he did not check the time.

Analyse how the writer uses language to present the atmosphere inside the glasshouse. Support your answer with evidence from the passage.
