The pencilled menu

The café’s new menu had been printed on thick cream card. Beneath the soup, someone had pencilled “no onions, please”. Beside the sandwiches was a request for softer bread. By Friday, the margins held suggestions in three languages and a drawing of a cup with two handles. The owner placed a jar of pencils beside the till. On Monday the soup had changed, and one table had been lowered. The menu still had the old prices. At the bottom, the owner had written, “Which changes helped?”

What can you infer about the relationship between the café owner and the customers? Support your answer with evidence.
