The unfinished recording
Ruth began the recording with the date and her grandfather’s name, just as the history project required. She asked about his first job. He described the bakery ovens, the flour in his cuffs and a delivery bicycle with one good brake. She checked the time and moved to her next question. Then he mentioned a boy who had taught him to ride. He stopped. Ruth glanced at the list, where six empty boxes still waited. She turned the paper face down. On the recording, the next sound is not a question. It is her chair moving closer to his.
Explain how the ending changes the focus of Ruth’s history project. Refer to the structure of the passage.
