An analyst attempts to synthesize a pure, dry sample of the insoluble salt, silver chloride (AgCl\text{AgCl}AgCl), to use as a calibration standard. They use the following method:

  • Pour 40 cm340\text{ cm}^340 cm3 of silver nitrate solution into a beaker.
  • Add sodium chloride solution dropwise until a white precipitate is first observed.
  • Allow the precipitate to settle to the bottom of the beaker.
  • Carefully pour off (decant) the supernatant liquid.
  • Scrape the wet silver chloride solid onto a watch glass and leave it on a windowsill to air dry.

Explain two improvements to this experimental method to increase both the yield (amount) and purity (quality) of the silver chloride obtained from the same starting volume of silver nitrate.
