A student prepares a sample of the insoluble salt, barium sulfate, using the following method:

  • Pour 50 cm3^{3}3 of barium chloride solution into a beaker.
  • Add potassium sulfate solution dropwise until a white precipitate is first seen.
  • Let the precipitate settle to the bottom of the beaker.
  • Carefully pour off (decant) the liquid from the top.
  • Use a spatula to scrape the wet solid barium sulfate onto a piece of paper to air dry.

Explain two improvements to this experimental method to increase the yield (amount) and purity (quality) of the barium sulfate obtained from the same starting volume of barium chloride.
