A student investigated the rate of respiration of germinating mung beans using the respirometer setup shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1: Schematic of a respirometer setup. A test tube contains germinating mung beans resting on a wire mesh platform. Below the platform are soda lime pellets. The tube is sealed with a rubber stopper through which a horizontal capillary tube passes. The capillary tube scale runs from 0 to 10 cm and contains a drop of colored oil used to track volume changes.

Figure 2 shows a close-up of the capillary tube scale, indicating the position of the colored liquid drop at the start (0 minutes) and after 8 minutes.
