GCSE Economics Marks per Grade: 2025 Thresholds

GCSE economics marks per grade for AQA and OCR, using confirmed 2025 raw mark thresholds. Check each boundary and understand your results-day total.

Results day can reduce two years of work to one urgent question: what did my marks actually mean? If you are checking GCSE economics marks per grade, the direct answer depends on your exam board and exam series. For the June 202520252025 exams, AQA required 133133133 raw marks out of 160160160 for grade 999, while OCR required 121121121.

Those are confirmed historical boundaries, not predictions for 202620262026. Grade thresholds are set after marking and can change when the difficulty of the papers changes.

GCSE Economics grade boundaries at a glance

Before reading the table, check four things:

  • your exam board -- usually AQA or OCR for GCSE Economics in England
  • the exam series shown on your results documents
  • your combined mark across both papers
  • the boundary for the overall qualification, not a single-paper boundary

Both AQA GCSE Economics 813681368136 and OCR GCSE Economics J205J205J205 have two papers worth 808080 marks each. The overall maximum is therefore:

80+80=16080+80=16080+80=160

Neither qualification is divided into foundation and higher tier. Every student on the same specification uses the same overall grade thresholds.

What a raw mark threshold means

A grade boundary is the minimum mark required for that grade. It is not the average mark achieved by students, and it is not a target decided before the examination.

Your GCSE economics raw marks from both papers are added together. The resulting total is compared with the overall thresholds. A mark on a boundary earns that grade; marks below it move into the next grade band.

This also explains why comparing AQA and OCR figures without context can be misleading. OCR's grade 999 threshold was lower in 202520252025, but that does not prove its qualification was easier. Boundaries help account for differences in paper demand so that standards remain comparable between years.

The same principle applies across GCSE subjects. Maths students can see it clearly in the AQA GCSE grade boundaries tables, where thresholds change between exam series.

Why the thresholds change each year

Exam boards do not promise a fixed number of marks for any grade. Awarding takes place after scripts have been marked, using evidence about how demanding the papers were and how students performed.

That creates an important distinction:

  • Previous boundaries tell you what was required in a completed series.
  • Predicted thresholds offer an estimate before results day.
  • Confirmed thresholds determine the grade actually awarded.

Historical data is useful for setting a realistic revision range, but it cannot reveal an upcoming boundary exactly. Aim above the previous threshold rather than treating it as a guarantee.

Using the boundaries to improve revision

A boundary tells you where you finished. A marked paper tells you why.

After completing practice, record separate totals for knowledge, application, analysis and evaluation. Economics also includes quantitative skills such as percentages, averages, revenue, costs, profit and interpreting graphs. If those calculations are costing marks, use the free GCSE Maths revision hub to repair the underlying skill.

Then follow a simple loop: attempt questions, mark honestly, identify the lost marks and practise that weakness again. MathsGenie's revision resources provide mini tests and practice materials, while the Edexcel GCSE Maths revision area demonstrates how lessons, question banks, past papers, mark schemes and video solutions can work together.

Common mistakes when checking Economics grades

Using one paper instead of the combined total

The final AQA and OCR thresholds are based on the qualification total out of 160160160, not either paper out of 808080.

Looking at the wrong board or year

AQA and OCR use different papers and different boundaries. Always match the specification code and exam series on your documents.

Treating a past boundary as a prediction

The June 202520252025 table cannot confirm the marks needed in June 202620262026. New boundaries are confirmed only after awarding.

Rounding a percentage into a grade

Grades are awarded from the published raw-mark boundary. Converting your score to a percentage and rounding it can produce the wrong conclusion.

Check the boundary, then focus on the next step

Results-day numbers feel final because they are precise. But their usefulness comes from what you do next. Check your board, combine the correct paper marks and compare the total with the confirmed table.
