Question 34

In this question use g=9.8g = 9.8g=9.8 m s−2^{-2}−2

A ball is projected vertically upwards from ground level with speed 20 m s−1^{-1}−1.

The ball is modelled as a particle moving freely under gravity.

a.

Using the model, find the maximum height above the ground reached by the ball.

b.

When the experiment is carried out, the ball is observed to reach a maximum height of only 17.2 metres. Explain, by referring to the modelling assumptions, why the model gives too large an answer.
