What Makes a Business Objective SMART?
Learn what makes a business objective SMART in A Level Business, with a clear example and how to judge whether a measurable target is achievable and realistic.
A business objective is SMART when it is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound. This turns a broad aim into a target the business can act on and review.
What each part means
- Specific: It says exactly what the business wants to improve, rather than simply saying it wants to “grow”.
- Measurable: It includes a way to check progress, such as the number of orders received each month.
- Achievable: The target is possible given what the business can do.
- Realistic: It makes sense in the business’s circumstances, including its resources and the market it faces.
- Time-bound: It sets a deadline for reaching the target.
Achievable and realistic are closely related. To distinguish them, ask whether the business can reach the target, then whether it is a sensible target given its situation.
Worked example
“Improve online sales” is a broad aim. A SMART objective would be: Increase monthly online orders from 200200200 to 220220220 within six months.
It identifies what will increase (online orders), gives a starting point and target that can be counted, and sets a deadline. Whether it is achievable and realistic depends on evidence: for example, whether the business has enough stock, staff and demand to fulfil the extra orders. The wording alone cannot prove those two parts.
Moving from 200200200 to 220220220 orders means an increase of 202020 orders, or 10%10\%10%. If recent sales have been rising and the business has spare capacity, that evidence supports the target. If demand is falling or stock is limited, the same target may be less realistic. A manager should review progress against the monthly orders figure before the deadline.
A common exam mistake is to label a target SMART just because it contains a number and a deadline. Those make it measurable and time-bound, but you still need to consider whether the target is specific, achievable and realistic for that business.
