The IMF and the World Bank are international financial institutions, but they have different main roles.
The IMF
The IMF aims to promote international monetary stability. It provides financial assistance to countries experiencing balance of payments difficulties, meaning they cannot meet their international payment obligations easily.
For example, a country with a shortage of foreign currency may borrow from the IMF to pay for essential imports or service external debt. IMF support may be conditional on policies such as reducing government spending, increasing taxation or allowing the exchange rate to depreciate. These conditions are intended to restore stability and improve the countryโs ability to repay the loan.
However, these policies can reduce aggregate demand in the short run. This may lead to lower economic growth, increased unemployment and reduced living standards, particularly for poorer households.
The World Bank
The World Bank mainly provides loans, grants and technical assistance to support long-term economic development. Its projects may improve infrastructure, education, healthcare, clean water supply and productive capacity.
Better infrastructure and human capital can increase productivity and help an economy achieve higher long-run economic growth. World Bank funding may also support poverty reduction and improve living standards.
However, World Bank projects may be ineffective if funds are mismanaged or corruption is present. Loans can also increase a countryโs external debt, creating future repayment costs. Large infrastructure projects may additionally cause environmental damage or benefit some groups more than others.
Key difference
The IMF mainly focuses on short- to medium-term financial stability and balance of payments problems. The World Bank focuses more on long-term development and poverty reduction. Their effectiveness depends on how suitable the conditions and projects are for the country receiving support.
