Religious pacifism is opposition to war and violence because of religious beliefs. A religious pacifist believes that faith calls them to seek peace rather than use violence to settle a conflict. Pacifism means refusing to support war or violence; religious pacifism means that this position is grounded in religious teachings.

The reason matters. Someone might oppose a particular war for political reasons without being a religious pacifist. In this topic, religious tells you where the opposition comes from. A Christian pacifist, for example, may believe that harming an enemy conflicts with Jesus’ teaching to love that enemy. This belief shapes what they choose to do when faced with conflict, not just what they say about war.

A Christian example

Some Christians are pacifists because Jesus taught his followers to love their enemies and to β€œturn the other cheek” rather than retaliate. Quakers, a Christian group, are well known for rejecting war and working for peace. They may respond to conflict through dialogue, campaigning or humanitarian work instead of fighting.

For example, a religious pacifist who opposes a war might campaign against it or help people displaced by it. Some may be conscientious objectors: people who refuse to take part in fighting because doing so would go against their conscience. This does not mean they ignore suffering or do nothing about injustice. They aim to respond without violence. Their objection concerns taking part in fighting; it does not prevent them from helping people affected by war.

Exam distinction

Do not write that all religious people are pacifists. People within the same religion can interpret teachings differently. Some Christians believe force may be justified in certain circumstances, while Christian pacifists reject war on religious grounds. In a GCSE Religious Studies answer, explain both the belief and its religious reason: a Christian pacifist may oppose war because they believe Jesus’ teaching to love enemies should guide how they respond to conflict.
