What Is Jibril’s Role Among Angels in Islam?
Learn Jibril’s role as Allah’s messenger in Islam, how he conveyed the Qur’an to Muhammad, and why angels matter for GCSE Religious Studies revision.
Jibril is the angel who delivered Allah’s revelations to the Prophet Muhammad. His role shows a central belief about angels in Islam: they are Allah’s messengers and carry out his commands.
What Do Angels Do?
Muslims believe angels are spiritual beings created by Allah. They obey him and perform the tasks he gives them. These tasks include conveying revelations, recording people’s actions and taking care of aspects of the world according to Allah’s will. A revelation is a message from Allah that makes his guidance known to human beings.
For example, the belief that angels record actions reminds Muslims that their choices matter. Recording actions is a different task from Jibril’s, but both examples show angels obeying Allah rather than acting independently. Naming a particular task helps make an exam answer precise.
Angels matter because they provide a link between Allah and humanity without being divine themselves. Muslims worship Allah, not angels.
Why Is Jibril Important?
Jibril, also called Gabriel, brought the revelations of the Qur’an to Muhammad. The first revelation came while Muhammad was in the Cave of Hira. Revelations continued over many years, and together they form the Qur’an, which Muslims believe is the word of Allah.
This means Jibril did not write or invent the Qur’an. His role was to deliver Allah’s message faithfully. Muslims also believe Jibril brought a message to Maryam (Mary), telling her that she would give birth to Isa (Jesus). Both examples show him acting as a messenger rather than speaking on his own authority.
In an exam answer, link Jibril’s role to its significance: because he conveyed Allah’s revelations to Muhammad, Muslims regard the Qur’an as guidance from Allah. A common mistake is to say that Jibril created the Qur’an. The Muslim belief is that the revelation came from Allah and Jibril delivered it.
