What Does Transubstantiation Mean in Catholic Belief?

Transubstantiation is the Catholic belief that, during the Eucharist at Mass, the bread and wine truly become the body and blood of Jesus Christ. They still look, taste and feel like bread and wine, but Catholics believe their underlying reality has changed. The Eucharist is an act of Christian worship centred on Jesus’ Last Supper. Catholics also understand it as a sacrament: an act of worship through which they receive God’s grace.

What Changes?

The word substance means what something really is, rather than how it appears to the senses. Transubstantiation means a change of substance. Catholics believe this happens when the priest says the words of consecration over the bread and wine at Mass. Consecration means setting something apart for a sacred purpose. The change is understood as an act of God, not a visible or chemical change.

For example, after consecration, a piece of bread still looks and tastes like bread. A Catholic believes, however, that it is now Christ’s body. The same belief applies to the wine becoming Christ’s blood. This does not mean Catholics expect either one to change its physical appearance.

Why It Matters

Catholics call this the Real Presence: Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist, rather than the bread and wine being only reminders of him. The belief is linked to the Last Supper, when Jesus gave his disciples bread and wine and spoke of them as his body and blood. Receiving the Eucharist in Holy Communion is therefore an important way for Catholics to be close to Christ. It also helps explain why Catholics treat the consecrated bread and wine with special reverence.

Common exam mistake: Do not say that Catholics believe the bread and wine symbolise Jesus’ body and blood, or that they visibly turn into flesh and blood. The key distinction is that Catholics believe their substance changes while their appearance remains the same.
