How Is Waste Managed Sustainably?
Learn how sustainable waste management reduces pollution, conserves resources and protects biodiversity for AQA GCSE Biology Ecology revision.
Waste is managed sustainably by reducing the amount produced, reusing materials, recycling resources and safely treating or disposing of remaining waste. This conserves resources and reduces pollution, helping to protect biodiversity.
Why must waste be managed?
As the human population and standard of living increase, more resources are used and more waste is produced. If waste is not handled properly, it can cause:
- water pollution from sewage, fertilisers and toxic chemicals
- air pollution from smoke and acidic gases
- land pollution from landfill and toxic chemicals
Pollution can kill plants and animals, so the variety of species in an ecosystemβits biodiversityβmay decrease.
Sustainable methods
Reduce: Using fewer materials means less waste is created. It also reduces the need to extract and process new resources.
Reuse: Products such as containers can be used again instead of being thrown away. This extends their useful life.
Recycle: Materials are processed to make new products. Recycling conserves resources and reduces the quantity of waste sent to landfill.
Treat waste safely: Sewage and harmful chemicals should be treated before they enter the environment. This reduces damage to organisms and ecosystems.
Dispose of unavoidable waste carefully: Landfill should be limited because it uses land that could provide habitats for organisms. Poorly managed landfill may also cause pollution.
Worked example
Suppose a council introduces separate collections for paper, glass and metal. More material is recycled, so less waste enters landfill. Fewer new raw materials are needed, and less habitat may be destroyed to obtain them. This makes waste management more sustainable and helps maintain biodiversity.
Exam mistake: Do not simply write βrecycling is good.β Explain the biological link: recycling reduces landfill or resource extraction, which reduces habitat destruction and helps protect biodiversity.
