What's the Difference Between Niche and Mass Markets?
Learn the difference between niche and mass markets in A Level Business, with clear examples and the key marketing implications to explain in an exam answer.
A niche market is a small, clearly defined group of customers with particular needs or preferences. A mass market is a large market in which a product is designed to appeal to a broad range of customers. The key difference is how narrowly the business targets its customers.
How does this affect marketing?
A business serving a niche market can tailor its product and promotion to the customers it wants to reach. For example, a company selling running shoes designed specifically for long-distance trail runners could focus its advertising on specialist running channels. Customers may be willing to pay more for features that meet their needs, but the smaller potential customer base can limit sales.
A business targeting a mass market aims for much wider appeal. A company selling everyday trainers might use broad advertising, offer widely popular styles and sell through many retailers. Higher sales volumes can help it reduce the average cost of making each pair, but it may face strong competition from other large brands.
These approaches can overlap within one business. A large trainer company might sell general-purpose shoes to a mass market while also offering a specialist trail-running range for a niche. This is why the choice should be evaluated in context: a niche offer may earn higher margins, while a mass-market offer may achieve higher sales volume. Neither result is guaranteed; costs, customer demand and competition also matter.
What should you remember?
Niche does not automatically mean expensive, and mass does not mean every customer buys the same thing. The distinction is about the breadth of the target market. In an exam answer, link that choice to a consequence for the business, such as its product design, promotion, potential sales or competition. Avoid describing a niche market as simply a small business: a large business can sell products aimed at a niche too.
