Common Marketing Objectives Explained
Learn common marketing objectives for A Level Business, including lead generation, brand awareness, sales growth, market share and customer loyalty.
Common marketing objectives include generating leads, increasing brand awareness, growing sales or market share, and improving customer loyalty. A marketing objective is a specific result a business wants its marketing activity to achieve.
What do they mean?
Lead generation means attracting potential customers who show an interest in buying, such as people who request a quote or sign up for a product demonstration. It is especially useful when customers take time to decide before purchasing.
Brand awareness means increasing the number of people who recognise or recall a brand. This may be a priority for a new business or a business entering a new market. Awareness can help customers consider a brand, but it does not guarantee sales.
Sales growth aims to increase the amount sold or the revenue earned from sales. Market share aims to increase the business’s proportion of total sales in a market. These are related but different: a business can increase sales while its market share falls if the overall market grows faster.
Customer loyalty aims to encourage existing customers to buy again. Retaining customers can be particularly important when repeat purchases are a significant source of revenue.
Making an objective useful
A business should make an objective clear enough to assess. For example, “increase the number of qualified enquiries from the website by 20% over six months” is more useful than “get more customers”. A qualified enquiry is interest from someone who is a plausible customer, rather than just any website visitor.
In an exam answer, link the objective to the business’s situation. A new brand might prioritise awareness, while an established business facing strong competition might focus on loyalty or market share. Do not confuse an objective with a method: “increase brand awareness” is an objective; “run social media adverts” is one possible way to pursue it.
