A worker is renovating a house.

a.

(i) State the equation linking gravitational potential energy, mass, g g\,g and height. (ii) The worker carries a pack of roof tiles with a mass of 14 kg from the ground up to the roof. Calculate the gravitational potential energy gained by the pack of tiles if the roof is 5 m high. (Take g=10 m/s2g = 10\text{ m/s}^2g=10 m/s2) (iii) What is the relationship between the gravitational potential energy gained by the pack of tiles and the work done by the worker to lift it (assuming no energy is lost to the surroundings)?

b.

To prevent heat loss from the house, a thermal insulating jacket is fitted around a hot water cylinder. A cross-section diagram of an insulating jacket. It consists of a thick central layer of fiberglass material where air is trapped inside between the fibres. There is a layer of shiny, silver-coloured plastic foil representing the outer surface and another similar layer representing the inner surface next to the water cylinder. Explain how this insulating jacket reduces the amount of heat lost from the hot water cylinder by conduction, convection and radiation.
