Figure 6: A simplified cross-sectional diagram of a tropical storm. At the very centre is a calm, cloud-free area of sinking air. Directly flanking this central area on both sides are towering, vertical walls of cumulonimbus clouds, labelled with the letter 'Y'. Arrows show warm, moist air spiralling rapidly upwards within these towering clouds. Further out from the centre are spiralling bands of rain clouds with alternating areas of rising and sinking air.
