Question 328

Text A: an original contemporary practice extract.

I had stopped expecting the bandstand in our park to reopen. For years, the railings around it had become part of my directions: walk past the tennis courts, turn at the locked gate. I could remember sitting there as a child, but only in fragments: striped deckchairs, a paper cup and a tune I no longer knew. While the roof was covered for repairs, the place seemed even further away.

On the reopening afternoon, a youth band played beneath the newly painted roof. I arrived intending to stay for five minutes. When the music began, people on separate paths slowed down. Some stood near the railings; others listened from benches or paused beside their bicycles. I could not name the piece, but knowing its name did not seem important. For a few minutes, strangers were paying attention to the same thing.

The restored bandstand has not transformed the park. Most days, I still cross it on my way somewhere else. However, it has become a place again rather than a marker beside my route. Now, when I turn at the gate, I sometimes remember to look towards the stage.

Text B: an original contemporary practice extract.

As a member of the group responsible for restoring the bandstand, I knew that fresh paint would be the change most visitors noticed. The less visible work involved harder decisions. Some sections of the roof could be repaired, while floorboards that could no longer support visitors safely had to be replaced. We photographed older features and recorded the new materials instead of suggesting that nothing had changed.

I was pleased when the first audience gathered, but I also watched the building rather than only the performers. I noticed where people stood, whether the entrances remained clear and where rainwater had collected after the previous night’s shower. Reopening a public structure does not end the work. It shows what must be checked once people begin using it again.

The bandstand can host performances without pretending that it has returned unchanged from the past. It now contains old details, careful replacements and evidence of recent choices. The opening concert was worth celebrating, but the more important achievement will be keeping the building useful and safe in the years ahead.

Compare how the writers present their ideas and perspectives about the bandstand and its restoration. In your response, you may compare what the bandstand means to people, what each writer notices about the restoration, and how each account ends. Support your comparisons with detailed references to both texts.
