A student investigated the energy released by burning propanol using the apparatus shown below. Diagram of a simple calorimetry setup. It shows a spirit burner containing propanol placed on a heatproof mat. Directly above the burner is a copper beaker supported by a clamp and stand. The copper beaker contains a known volume of water, and a thermometer is immersed in the water. The setup is completely open to the room with no draft protection.

Explain how the apparatus or method could be improved to give a temperature rise closer to the theoretical value.
