A student investigated the temperature change when methanol is burned.

A diagram showing a spirit burner containing methanol placed directly underneath a copper calorimeter containing 100 g of water. A thermometer is placed inside the water to measure the temperature rise. There are no draft shields around the apparatus.

The theoretical temperature rise for burning a given mass of methanol is 78.5∘C78.5^{\circ}\text{C}78.5∘C.

In the experiment, the actual temperature rise for burning this mass of methanol was only 31.2∘C31.2^{\circ}\text{C}31.2∘C.

One reason why the temperature rise is less than expected is that the methanol does not burn completely.

Give another reason why, even if the methanol burns completely, the actual temperature rise is much less than the theoretical value.
