A physiology student investigated the effect of convective airflow on evaporative cooling, which models how wind affects sweat-mediated thermoregulation.

They constructed two simulated mammalian limbs using cylinders of agar gel covered with a water-saturated membrane:

  • Limb X was positioned in front of a fan generating a constant horizontal airflow of 4.5 m s-1.
  • Limb Y was placed in still air (0 m s-1).

The student recorded the surface temperature of each simulated limb every 3 minutes for 18 minutes. Their results are shown in the table below.
