Figure 1 shows a cross-section of a human eye. Labels X and Y point to parts of the eye. Label X points to the clear outer layer at the very front of the eye (cornea). Label Y points to the muscle ring attached to the suspensory ligaments (ciliary muscles). Light rays originating from a near object are shown passing through the front of the eye and the lens, and converging at a focal point that lies behind the retina at the back of the eyeball. Marks indicate the path of the light rays.
