A strong GCSE Maths grade can make A Level seem like the obvious next step. Then the language changes. AS, A2, linear assessment, pure maths, statistics and mechanics all appear before you have answered the simplest question: what course are you actually taking?
The short answer is that AS Mathematics is normally a one-year qualification, while a full A Level is usually studied over two years and covers more content in greater depth. In England, AS is a separate qualification and its result does not count towards the final A Level grade. In Wales and Northern Ireland, current WJEC and CCEA specifications retain an AS stage that contributes 4040%40 of the full qualification.

What is the difference between AS and A Level Maths?
In England, AS Mathematics is a standalone linear qualification, generally completed in one year and graded A--E. It can be taught alongside the first year of A Level because much of the content overlaps, but the AS result does not contribute to the A Level grade.
A full A Level in England is a separate linear qualification, normally studied across two years and graded A*--E. Its final examinations assess material from across the complete course. You do not need to sit AS examinations before completing the full A Level, although a school may choose to offer AS entry.
The position differs elsewhere in the UK. Under the current WJEC Mathematics specification used in Wales, the two AS units contribute 4040%40 of the full A Level and the A2 units contribute 6060%60. CCEA Mathematics in Northern Ireland follows the same overall 4040%40 AS and 6060%60 A2 weighting.

How GCSE, AS and A Level compare
GCSE Maths establishes the foundation through number, algebra, ratio, geometry, probability and statistics. Foundation and Higher tier cover different ranges of content and available grades, with Higher-tier algebra providing particularly important preparation for Level 3 study.
AS Mathematics moves towards greater abstraction. Familiar techniques are used inside multi-stage questions, while calculus, logarithms and mechanics introduce new mathematical language. You are increasingly expected to choose a method rather than wait for the wording to announce it.
Full A Level extends the AS foundations and combines topics more freely. What do you study in AS Mathematics?
In England, the national subject content creates a substantial common core across approved specifications. Paper structures and wording vary between Pearson Edexcel, AQA, OCR and Eduqas, but AS Mathematics includes pure maths, statistics and mechanics.
Pure maths typically covers proof, algebra and functions, coordinate geometry, sequences, trigonometry, exponentials, logarithms, differentiation, integration and vectors. What does the full A Level add?
Full A Level Mathematics expands both the syllabus and the expected depth of reasoning. Pure maths develops areas including advanced functions, parametric equations, radians, numerical methods, further differentiation and integration, differential equations and vectors.
Statistics extends work with probability distributions, hypothesis testing and the normal distribution. Mechanics develops ideas such as moments, projectiles, resolving forces and variable acceleration. Exact organisation varies, so revision should always follow your own specification.

Why the jump from GCSE feels difficult
At GCSE, a topic heading or familiar diagram often hints at the intended method. At A Level, selecting the method becomes part of the assessment. Several techniques may be available, and only one may lead efficiently to the answer.

Probability and data interpretation matter because statistics begins quickly. Clear written working matters too: valid intermediate steps may earn method marks even when a later arithmetic error affects the final answer.
Use short diagnostic sets to identify precise weaknesses. “I am bad at algebra” is too broad to guide revision; “I lose signs when expanding two brackets” gives you a problem you can actually fix.
A revision method that works at both levels
Use a repeatable cycle: learn, practise, mark, repair and retest. Start with one revision lesson, then answer practice questions without copying the method. Mark the work carefully and classify each lost mark as a knowledge gap, algebra error, interpretation problem or presentation issue.
