The table shows overall qualification boundaries for three anchor grades. Grade $4$ is the standard pass benchmark, grade $7$ represents strong performance, and grade $9$ is the highest grade. These are raw marks across the whole qualification, not marks for one paper.

The pre-pandemic reference point: 2019

Summer $2019$ was the last normal summer examination series before the pandemic. It therefore remains a useful reference point, although it should not be treated as a forecast.

The difference between boards is immediately visible. A grade $4$ required $88$ marks with AQA but $59$ with Eduqas. That does not mean one board was easier. The qualifications had different total marks, papers, question demands and awarding evidence.

The transition year: 2022

Ofqual described $2022$ as a transition year between pandemic-era outcomes and pre-pandemic grading. Boundaries were notably lower than in $2019$ across several Business qualifications. AQA’s grade $4$, for example, moved from $88$ to $64$, while Eduqas moved from $59$ to $43$.

These figures can make an old paper produce an encouraging mock grade. However, Ofqual has advised schools not to use pandemic-transition boundaries as the main indication of the standard expected under normal grading.

The return towards normal grading: 2023

In $2023$, England returned to pre-pandemic grading standards, with protection recognising disruption to that cohort. Boundaries increased across all three boards shown, although they did not simply return to their $2019$ positions.

That distinction matters. Standards may remain comparable even when raw boundaries differ because each paper has its own level of demand.

Higher boundaries in 2024

The $2024$ series produced higher grade $4$, $7$ and $9$ boundaries than $2023$ for AQA, Edexcel and Eduqas. This is one reason students sometimes conclude that boundaries are permanently rising.

But one year is not a trend. It is a single observation shaped by that year’s papers and performance evidence.

A mixed movement in 2025

The $2025$ figures make the point clearly. AQA and Edexcel boundaries fell slightly at the anchor grades, while Eduqas boundaries rose. Edexcel’s grade $9$ moved from $147$ to $143$; Eduqas moved from $120$ to $121$.

So the fairest summary of recent GCSE Business grade boundary trends is fluctuation, not predictable inflation.

Why GCSE Business boundaries change

An easier paper normally needs a higher boundary to maintain the same grade standard. A more demanding paper normally needs a lower one. Exam boards consider statistical evidence alongside senior examiners’ judgement of students’ work, while Ofqual oversees comparability.

There is no fixed quota limiting how many students may receive a grade. Nor can the next boundary be known before the examination has been marked. A predicted boundary is only an estimate.

• Comparing raw marks across boards: totals and assessments differ, so $120$ marks do not represent identical performance everywhere.
• Using component boundaries as final grades: paper-level boundaries may be notional. The official qualification grade is based on the overall total.
• Treating $2022$ as a normal benchmark: it was a transition year with more generous grading arrangements.
• Assuming a high boundary made the qualification harder: a higher boundary may indicate that the paper was more accessible.
• Revising only to scrape last year’s boundary: a small movement could leave that target short. Build a sensible safety margin.
