Marcus takes a prescription stimulant recreationally. At first, he only took it on weekends to party, but he now uses it every morning. He finds he must take triple his original dose to experience the same boost in cognitive performance.

When he does not take the stimulant, Marcus experiences debilitating fatigue and muscle tremors. He has also become convinced that he cannot handle his demanding university coursework or interact confidently with his peers if he does not take it.
