Why Is a Business Plan Important?
Learn why a business plan matters: it clarifies objectives, tests financial viability, guides decisions and helps persuade lenders while allowing for change.
A business plan is important because it sets out what a business wants to achieve and how it intends to achieve it. It helps the owners test whether their idea is viable, make decisions and explain the business to potential lenders or investors. This is especially useful for a new business with little trading history to show whether demand and costs are realistic.
Turning objectives into action
A business plan usually describes the business’s objectives, target market, competitors, marketing approach and financial forecasts. An objective is a goal the business aims to achieve. Writing these details down makes the owners think about what resources they need and what they will do if sales are lower than expected. Financial forecasts can show predicted sales, cash coming in and payments going out, helping owners spot when they might need extra finance. The plan also gives them a basis for checking progress and changing course.
For example, someone planning to open a café might forecast how many customers they need each day to cover rent, wages and ingredients. If the forecast depends on attracting more customers than the location is likely to provide, they can reconsider the premises or costs before committing money. This could reduce the risk of taking on costs that the business cannot afford.
Communicating with others
A clear plan can help a business seek finance. A lender or investor can use it to understand the business’s aims, expected income, costs and risks. It can also help employees and managers work towards the same objectives. The plan does not guarantee funding: the assumptions and evidence behind it matter.
The key exam point is that a business plan is useful for planning and communication, but it is not a guarantee of success. Forecasts are estimates, and customers, competitors or costs may change. A business should review its plan as it learns what actually happens.
