The course that fitted the calendar

Text: an original contemporary adult-learning-account-style practice extract.

I chose the evening course with the least exciting title. The brochure offered a dramatic introduction to film-making on Thursdays and a modest course in document design on Tuesdays. I pictured myself holding a camera. Then I checked who could collect my daughter on each evening.

Tuesday worked. Thursday would require two favours every week and a journey across town between them. The decision did not feel like choosing what I most wanted to learn. For the first class, I carried that disappointment into a room where we discussed headings and page margins. By the third week, I had redesigned a notice for the tenants’ association and watched neighbours find the relevant date without asking me where it was.

I still want to take the film course. Enjoying Tuesday has not erased Thursday. But an available class taught me something useful that an imagined one could not yet teach me. The calendar did not reveal my deepest interest; it made one interest possible. Calling that choice either a defeat or a perfect discovery would leave out half of what happened.

In this extract, the writer tries to show how practical circumstances can influence an educational choice.
