Question 114

Making room for a bicycle

Text: an original contemporary personal account-style practice extract.

I used to keep my bicycle beside the kitchen table because the shared hallway had no storage space. Our building’s new cycle room changed that, but I did not use it immediately. The door opened with a separate key, and the first rack stood too close to the wall for my handlebars. I mentioned both problems at the residents’ meeting.

After the meeting, the caretaker moved the first rack away from the wall. The building manager also arranged for the cycle-room lock to accept the same key as the main entrance. I began using the room the following week. A glossy notice had announced the new space; two practical changes persuaded me to put my bicycle there.

From the paragraph beginning “After the meeting”, identify two practical changes that persuaded the writer to use the cycle room.
