The portrait with the untidy desk

Text: an original contemporary exhibition-review-style practice extract.

The portrait showed the scientist beside a desk covered with loose pages. A pencil lay beneath a mug, and the corner of a calculation disappeared under a shopping receipt. I heard a visitor ask why the artist had not tidied the desk before painting it. I had been looking at the same papers with an unexpected feeling of relief.

The exhibition included a more formal photograph of the scientist standing against a plain background. It recorded a face I could recognise but offered little sense of work being interrupted and resumed. In the painted desk, the hidden calculation made me imagine a thought that had not finished at the edge of the frame. The receipt did not prove anything about genius. It admitted an ordinary errand into a picture that might otherwise have looked sealed against daily life.

A cluttered desk can become a costume as easily as a polished medal can. I cannot know how carefully the artist arranged these objects. Still, their placement gave this portrait a useful incompleteness. I left thinking less about a person who possessed an answer and more about someone who needed somewhere to keep working.

In this extract, the writer tries to show that an imperfect-looking detail can strengthen a portrait.
