Question 423

The sound beneath the road

Text: an original contemporary reportage-style practice extract.

Above ground, the junction was performing its usual morning disorder: buses braking, horns competing, a delivery driver asking a question nobody could hear. Below it, a microphone lowered through a service opening recorded a steady hiss. The leak was invisible from the pavement. Its sound had already occupied a page in the engineer’s notebook.

The team listened from three points and compared the recordings. To me, each sample sounded much the same. The engineer adjusted the headphones and described a change I could barely detect. This was not the cinematic moment in which a machine announced the answer. It was patient work with uncertain edges, followed by another check. When the crew finally marked a rectangle on the road, the chalk lines looked absurdly modest beside the noise and effort that had put them there.

Traffic was diverted before the surface was opened. Drivers could see the cones and the new delay; they could not see the listening that had narrowed the search. At lunchtime, someone walking past complained that the workers were standing still. They were waiting for a fresh reading. The road, I had learned, could require attention long before it required a hole.
