Question 410

After the prize had been announced

Text A: an original contemporary practice extract.

The community newsletter described my short film as the winner of a local competition. At the next club meeting, people asked what I would make for the national contest. I had enjoyed making one film about my grandfather’s allotment and had not entered anything else. The award seemed to have supplied a future plan that I had never agreed to.

I thanked the club and said I wanted to finish the family recording project before deciding about another competition. A few people looked disappointed, but one offered to help catalogue the interviews. I kept the prize certificate beside the editing notes. It recorded something completed; it did not need to become an instruction about what the next piece of work must be.

Text B: an original contemporary practice extract.

After my cake won the neighbourhood fair, the organisers invited me to take charge of the baking category next year. They described it as a natural next step. I had entered partly because my sister was visiting and we enjoyed preparing the cake together. Winning did not give me the time or enthusiasm to organise a whole section.

I declined the role but offered to bring another cake if the dates suited us. The organiser accepted that answer and found somebody who wanted the larger task. I was still pleased to have won. I was also relieved that being good at one enjoyable afternoon’s activity did not require me to turn it into an annual responsibility. The rosette went into a drawer with our photograph of the kitchen.
