Moving the town statue

Text: an original contemporary commentary-style practice extract.

The statue had occupied the square for so long that most of us used it as a meeting point without looking at the face. When the council proposed moving it to the museum courtyard, the town suddenly became full of experts on its importance. People who had walked past for years discovered that the bronze figure was indispensable to every future walk.

I do not think that makes their attachment false. Habits can hold a memory before words have caught up with it. But a square is not a cupboard in which one generation can lock its decisions forever. The meeting revealed concerns that the shouting outside had hidden: where wreaths would be laid, whether the courtyard would remain open in the evening, how the empty space might be used. These were questions with possible answers. “Never” was not.

The final plan kept the base in the square as a seat and moved the figure where visitors could read more about it. Some people remained angry; others thought the compromise timid. On Saturday, I waited on the old base for a friend. Two strangers asked where the statue had gone. For the first time in years, the meeting point made us talk about the person we had previously stood beneath.
