When the fabric shrank
Text: an original contemporary report-style practice extract.
The costume workshop washed a sample of each donated fabric before cutting the stage outfits. One blue cotton sample became shorter, while a red sample lost colour into the water. Neither fabric was thrown away: the blue cloth was reserved for smaller pieces, and the red cloth was used for a backdrop that would not be washed again.
The designer put the test samples on a board beside the cutting table. Visitors often assumed they were colour choices. In fact, they recorded what the material had done during washing. The board saved a longer explanation every time a new volunteer arrived.
From the opening paragraph, identify two changes caused by washing the fabric samples.
