Question 88

The refill trial

Text: an original contemporary report-style practice extract.

A shopping arcade tested a drinking-water refill point for four weeks. The unit stood beside the information desk rather than inside a shop. Staff counted refills with a mechanical counter; they did not record customers’ names or contact details. A notice explained that bottles could be filled without making a purchase.

During the trial, the largest queue formed after the lunchtime exercise class. Staff moved a leaflet stand so that waiting customers would not block the entrance. The final report recommended keeping the refill point beside the information desk because staff there could notice a leak quickly. Moving it to the quieter upper floor was considered but rejected.

From the paragraph beginning “During the trial”, identify one reason the report gave for keeping the refill point beside the information desk.
