Names that did not make the sign

Text: an original contemporary community-column-style practice extract.

When residents chose a name for the new community garden, the winning suggestion went on the entrance sign. The other names vanished from the record. Some people had spent evenings explaining why their choices mattered; afterwards, it was easy to assume that nobody had listened.

The committee has now kept a short list of the suggestions and the reasons people gave for them. One resident called this unnecessary: a garden sign should tell visitors where they are, not replay a discussion. But the list shows that the chosen name was considered alongside others, rather than appearing by accident. It also preserves the different memories people connected to the place.

A list cannot make everyone agree, and visitors may not want to read a page before entering a garden. Still, disagreement need not be treated as something embarrassing to erase. The sign gives the garden one name; the record lets the community remember how it arrived there.

Evaluate how successfully the writer convinces the reader that keeping a record of the names considered for the community garden is worthwhile. Support your views with detailed reference to the extract.

You may find it helpful to consider:

  • why some residents felt their suggestions had been overlooked
  • how the writer answers the objection to keeping a record
  • what the writer admits the record cannot achieve.
