Question 299

A trail after sunset

For its next issue, a youth culture magazine is inviting reviews of local evening activities. Imagine that you have experienced a night-time garden trail and are writing for its teenage readers. Create the venue and details of your visit.

The organisers collected opinions from 120 teenage visitors:

Aspect of the trailResponses
The illuminated route78 called it a highlight; 24 found some sections difficult to follow; 18 gave no opinion
The sound installations66 said they added to the atmosphere; 36 said they sometimes made conversation difficult; 18 gave no opinion
The time allowed54 thought it was about right; 42 wanted longer; 24 wanted a shorter visit

Write a review that uses details of your visit to interpret these responses and decide which teenage visitors you would recommend the trail to.

You could explore:

  • how the route and sound work together, or compete for visitors’ attention
  • which preferences might explain the different opinions about pace and atmosphere
  • what the organisers could change, and whether that would affect your recommendation.

You may also use your own ideas.

Your response will be assessed for communication and organisation, and for vocabulary, sentence structures, spelling and punctuation. The total includes 16 marks for vocabulary, sentence structures, spelling and punctuation.
