Magnesium carbonate decomposes when heated to produce magnesium oxide and carbon dioxide gas:

In a laboratory investigation, a student strongly heated 8.43 g of magnesium carbonate in a crucible until no further change in mass was observed.

The white powder of magnesium oxide remaining in the crucible was carefully collected and weighed.

The results recorded from the experiment are shown below:

  • Mass of magnesium carbonate reactant: 8.43 g
  • Mass of magnesium oxide product isolated: 3.12 g
  • Calculated maximum mass of magnesium oxide expected: 4.03 g
